Fayne: Make Your Way Back Home Tour

Fayne - Queen of Kings

I admit that I haven’t heard about Fayne prior to this, even if the Montreal band had previously released two EPs about a decade ago: You Took it All Away in 2004, and Delivering the Final Blow in 2006. The least I can say is that it was a welcoming surprise to discover their music through their new CD The Queen of Kings, which stands out positively from what’s currently on the market.

Upon first listen, this 5-song EP (including an interlude) should please fans of Misery Signals, Emmure, or Alexisonfire, which places Fayne somewhere between melodic metalcore, screamo and a touch of “djent”. We recognize immediately the quality ingredients: heavy sound and precise guitars (downtuned), repetitive drum patterns in sync with the guitars, and vocals that alternate between screams and clean vocals. Singer’s Joseph Espinosa’s exceptional voice is what caught my attention here, with a tone of voice that strangely reminds me of Daryl Palumbo from Glassjaw. Guitars, while being aggressive in design, have a rather unorthodox sound (almost digital) and seem to be shy in the mix, being placed far behind both drums and vocals, which is not a bad thing and makes The Queen of Kings very catchy.

Songs are rolling one after the other and hit you twice before you can see it coming. The change of grooves and general arrangements add a very enjoyable element of unpredictability that keeps us on our toes until the end.

After several listen at high volume, I am convinced that any metalcore fan will enjoy discovering it, or rediscovering it.
